UNICEF and IIMC launch health journalism programme for scribes

nited Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has launched a Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) to build the capacity of media in public health reporting in general and routine immunization in particular.


The three-month ‘Certificate Course on Critical Appraisal’ will enhance knowledge, skills and core competence of journalists on all aspects related to public health reporting. It will specifically support journalists in producing evidence based quality reports on routine immunization including ‘adverse effects following immunization’ (AEFI).


A first-of-its kind course has been conceptualized by UNICEF India in collaboration with the University of Oxford, Thomson Reuters Foundation and the George Institute of Global Health. The course is being offered on a pilot basis at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) to its students and will be offered to government officials in 2016.


The course offers a unique opportunity for professional skill development of journalism students, mid-level media, editors and government officials.  Public health experts from UNICEF, Oxford University, and partners from Reuters Foundations, IIMC, George Institute of Public Health and senior members from the media will be actively involved in the delivery of this course.


According to Louis-Georges Arsenault, UNICEF India Representative, media is a key and strategic partner for UNICEF an this initiative aims to enhance knowledge and skills of media students and journalists on all aspects related to public health reporting.


“The CASP pilot programme is being offered as a certificate programme to 40 students of IIMC. This module will be delivered as a three-month short course and will comprise workshops, field visits apart from classroom teaching to give media students a comprehensive idea about ground level realities related to public health issues,” said Sunit Tandon, Director General of IIMC.
