Who will save doctors from “goonda” elements in Uttarakhand? पुलिस-नेताओं की मिलीभगत से डॉक्टर्स सकते में

It has been six days since some Congress leaders and workers bashed up a senior cardiologist in Haldwani forcing entire medical fraternity to take to agitation path. Such is political pressure on police and administration that instead of taking action the accused, senior administrative officials are trying to find a formula for compromise. If the matter is not resolved soon the state government will have to have the wrath of Uttarakhand medical community…

ailure on part of the state administration to act against the alleged accused who bashed up a senior cardiologist of Central Hospital in Haldwani has led to people of Uttarakhand suffering from lack of treatment. While doctors of Haldwani have been on strike for past four days, on Tuesday (December 22, 2015) all doctors of the state joined the stir, while government doctors across the state are also likely to join the strike from Wednesday (December 23) if the police failed to take action against culprits who are senior functionaries of the ruling Congress. (See story here…)

Such is the poltical pressure on police and local administration not to act against the guilty that even after Nainital High Court’s directions those behind the whole incident of beating up Dr. Pramod Joshi are roaming freely on the streets of Haldwani, staging dharnas and threatening administrative officials of Central Hospital. Utter lack of disregard for the law has left people of the state baffled who are asking the state government whether leaders of ruling party are above the law.

Haldwani MLA and Finance Minister Indira Hridyesh is learnt to have been deputed by Chief Minister Harish Rawat to defuse the situation by reaching out some kind of compromise between the agitating doctors and local Congress leadership that is also staging dharnas against the Central Hospital. Ms. Hridyesh on Monday had two-hour long discussion with the member of Indian Medical Association which failed. While senior Congress leaders and ministers have remained mum over the entire episode, the opposition BJP has charged the government for going soft on accused who are close to senior party leaders.

“Such incident sends wrong message to doctors and medical staff who feel that there is no one to defend them…Doctors and entire medical fraternity is living in fear and it the responsibility of the state government to assure doctors and their support staff that law and order will prevail and all those booked in the case will be severely dealt with. There is no excuse for beating up doctors or vandalizing hospitals. Any aggrieved party alleging medical negligence should approach police and courts, but any kind of violence cannot be justified. Incidents of violence against doctors have grown in recent pasts and it is the duty of the state government and the administration to take action all such anti-social elements,” Leader of Opposition in Uttarakhand Ajay Bhatt told “Uttarakhand Panorama”.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Uttarakhand police have now swung into action after the High Court reprimanded the administration for not taking the matter seriously. High Court has also ordered police to provide proper police security to all doctors and staff of Central Hospital. Police officials have contacted Dr. Pramod Joshi who is now recuperating in a hospital in Delhi. Dr. Joshi had suffered serious injuries when he was attacked in the Central Hospital by alleged members of Congress and local leaders led by Haldwani Block Pramukh Bhola Bhatt.
